EU Regulatory Changes in the Light of Recent Events
Lord John Eatwell, President, Queens' College, Cambridge

The luncheon on Tuesday will include a keynote address by Lord John Eatwell, President, Queens' College, Cambridge, who is leading the regulatory reform effort in the EU. Lord Eatwell will share his views on how regulation is changing in Europe and the impact on ERM and the United States.
Lord Eatwell is Professor of Financial Policy, Director of the Centre for Financial Analysis and Policy (CFAP), and President of Queens' College.
From 1985 to 1992, John Eatwell served as economic adviser to Neil Kinnock, the leader of the British Labour Party. In that post he was responsible for much of the work which led to a substantial re-alignment of the Labour Party's economic policies. In 1992, he entered the House of Lords, and from 1993 to 1997 was Principal Opposition Spokesman on Treasury and Economic Affairs.
In 1988, together with others, he set up the Institute for Public Policy Research, which has now established itself as one of Britain's leading policy think-tanks. He remains chairman of the Board of Trustees.
In 1997, he joined the board of the Securities and Futures Authority, Britain's securities markets regulator. In this position he has developed his interest in securities regulation, particularly with respect to risk management in financial institutions. In a recent report to the Ford Foundation he proposed the establishment of a World Financial Authority to manage systemic risk in the international financial system.
John Eatwell is a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with particular responsibility for the Royal Ballet. He is also a member of the Securities and Futures Authority. He is chairman of the Commercial Radio Companies Association and the British Library. Lord Eatwell is an elected foreign member of the Italian Academy of Sciences.
John Eatwell has taught economics at Cambridge since 1970, and became President of Queens' College, Cambridge in 1997. From 1980 to 1996 he was also a Professor in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, New York. He has been a Visiting Professor at Columbia University, New York, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the University of Amsterdam.
John Eatwell earned his BA from University of Cambridge and AM, PhD from Harvard University. His research interests include European integration and problems of unemployment; disguised unemployment, the definitions of competition and equilibrium in intertemporal general equilibrium models.
