Moderator: Paul Horgan, PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP
Presenters: Douglas Webster, US Department of Labor; Colin Lawrence, Prudential Risk Management Division; Rick Shaw, The Bermuda Monetary Authority; Matthew Feldman, FHLB Chicago; Nancy Bennett, American Academy of Actuaries
Recent events have highlighted the tight connections linking all sectors and regions across the global economy. Financial markets in particular have undergone substantial transformations, precipitating rapid actions by central banks and other regulatory institutions to maintain market liquidity and funding availability. ERM provides a disciplined management approach for firms to operate in this dynamic environment by taking a strategic and holistic view of risk management across an organization. In this session, experts will explore the impact of regulating agency actions on ERM practice, the importance of ERM concepts in developing a robust financial system going forward, the issues dominating policy debates and the opportunities for ERM to inform future policy discussions.
3:30-4:45 p.m. Modeling Lessons Learned
Moderator: Tom Hettinger, EMB America
Presenters: Dan Rodriguez, Credit-Suisse; Sameer Vittal, General Electric-Energy; Anthony Dardis, Barrie & Hibbert Inc; Leo Tilman, L.M. Tilman & Co.
One result of the current turmoil in the financial markets is that risk management has come under increased scrutiny and criticism-some of it well deserved. This poses a unique challenge and opportunity to risk management professionals. This session is intended to address general lessons that can be learned to improve the modeling and management of risk.
Experts will focus not just on the lessons from recent events, but also modeling lessons that those charged with managing risk for insurance and financial firms may be able to learn from those in other industries.
